Being a part of something bigger

In June 2013 two Melbourne artists started a project to commemorate the Anzac day centenary on 25 April 2015. Their initial aim was to collect 5,000 handcrafted poppies to display at Melbourne’s Federation Square. The project captured the imagination and support of the community. Ultimately more than 250,000 poppies were displayed.
The project had personal meaning for me.
Koonung Cottage joined the project. At first the Cottage ran workshops but soon became a collection point for ‘bucketloads’ of poppies that people made at home. Even people who did not usually visit the Cottage sent their contributions to the community hub. Koonung Cottage delivered 2,200 poppies to the project.
