Pencil sketching

Bob Nichol

Bob Nichol started teaching pencil sketching at Koonung Cottage in 1989. At times there were waiting lists for his very popular classes. Although the focus was on pencil sketching, Bob also introduced students to other media such as watercolours.
I could not find another teacher like Bob.
In 1992 Bob Nichol and another Melbourne artist, David Jamieson, jointly published Vanishing Australiana. This book contains illustrations of old buildings that are disappearing from the Australian landscape.

Bob ceased teaching at Koonung Cottage in 2007. He was 95 years old. At the time of writing, in 2015, many people at Koonung Cottage remember Bob with great fondness. It is reported that he was still teaching at his retirement village at the age of 100 years.

Bob Nichol donated the sketch used in the header image on this site.
