A Caring community
Koonung Cottage started operating in 1978 and children’s playgroups were an important activity from the outset. There were often waiting lists and in 2000 some groups were operating at the local All Saints’ Kindergarten.
A children’s library was established in 1979. At different times there were holiday programs, after school programs, and preschooler walks. The child educators were incredibly caring towards my son. They also cared for me. Childcare has also been an important service offered by the Cottage. Staff and committee volunteers have managed pay, government regulation and building issues. In 1988 there was a request to increase childcarers’ pay to $6 per hour. The 1989 building extension enlarged the facilities to comply with government regulations.

They say it takes a village to raise a child. The occasional care at Koonung Cottage was my village. I don't know what I would have done without it.
